Diaa Alsersawi graduates this June with two majors, in English literature and in Social Justice/Cultural Studies.
Diaa says he chose the English major “because I have always been interested in storytelling and how people perform their narratives, an interest that was further fueled by double majoring in cultural studies and social justice.” The combination has proven a powerful experience for many students.
“The two majors together allowed me to examine how the personal is implicated with larger structures of power and histories of race, gender, sexuality, class, and other constructs,” Diaa continues.
Then he sums up the arrangement succinctly: “Really, such a great combo to do the two majors!”
As for plans after graduation, Diaa is faced with a pleasant dilemma. He has been accepted into two Ph.D. programs, one in English at the University of Colorado—Boulder and one in comparative literature at UCLA. So he’ll need to choose which path to follow.
Best of luck with your decision, and with your graduate-school career, Diaa!
