Mayfield’s book, Assimilate or Go Home: Notes from a Failed Missionary on Rediscovering Faith, was published in 2016 and describes her work with Somali refugees in Portland. In 2011, D. L. Mayfield won McSweeney’s column contest and was named a notable essayist by the Best American Essays series editors. For more information, visit her website at www.dlmayfield.com.

The Fan Mayhall Gates Literary Reading is an annual event co-sponsored by the SPU English Department and Image journal. It was established in 2006 to honor Professor Fan Gates on the occasion of her retirement from a long, distinguished teaching career. The event is free and open to the public.
